Why do swelling and varicose veins happen in pregnancy?

In the second half of pregnancy, the growing uterus can slow venous return from the legs. Fluid may collect in tissues, ankles may swell, and varicose veins can become more visible.

Avoiding long periods of standing still, walking, elevating the legs, and using compression stockings if recommended can help. Sudden one-sided leg swelling, redness, or pain needs urgent evaluation for a possible clot.
