Screening tests
Why are the first trimester screen and glucose test important?
The first trimester screen, done around 11 to 14 weeks, combines nuchal translucency and blood markers to estimate risk for certain chromosomal conditions. It is not diagnostic; high risk leads to further testing.
The glucose tolerance test, usually done around 24 to 28 weeks, checks for gestational diabetes. Untreated gestational diabetes can increase risks such as a large baby, excess amniotic fluid, and difficult birth.
