Why are folic acid and B12 important?

Folic acid is essential for healthy closure of the neural tube, which forms the baby's brain and spinal cord. Deficiency is linked to serious neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

It is usually recommended before pregnancy and through the first 12 weeks. B12 also supports the folate cycle, so deficiency should be corrected under medical guidance.
