When can the baby hear and sense the outside world?
The baby's hearing system starts maturing around the middle of pregnancy. Internal sounds may be perceived around 18 weeks, and outside sounds become clearer around 24 to 27 weeks.
The mother's voice, heartbeat, and rhythmic sounds become familiar. Very loud or sudden noises can temporarily change the baby's movements or heart rate.
