If there are no risk factors, sex usually does not harm the baby during pregnancy. The baby is protected by the uterine wall, amniotic fluid, and the mucus plug at the cervix.

Avoid sex if there is bleeding, placenta previa, leaking fluid, risk of preterm birth, cervical insufficiency, or a clinician has advised restriction. Pain or bleeding after sex should be assessed.
