How does the baby get nutrition in the womb?

As pregnancy progresses, the baby receives nutrients and oxygen through the placenta. Glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and oxygen pass to the baby's circulation through the umbilical cord.

Carbon dioxide and other waste products travel back through the cord and placenta into the mother's circulation. The mother's blood and baby's blood normally do not directly mix; a microscopic placental barrier separates them.
