Bleeding and discharge

Can you have a period while pregnant?

A true menstrual period does not happen during pregnancy because pregnancy hormones prevent the uterine lining from shedding. However, spotting or bleeding can occur and may be mistaken for a period.

Light implantation spotting can be brief, but any bleeding in pregnancy deserves attention. Bright red blood, pain, cramping, dizziness, or heavy bleeding should be assessed the same day.
